LCM-U Chair
This is a chair. It was designed by Charles Eames and Ray Kaiser Eames and manufactured by Herman Miller Furniture Company. It is dated ca. 1950 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is chrome-plated steel, slunk-skin pony hide, plywood, rubber, metal screws.. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Both the LCM (Low Chair Metal) and LCW (Low Chair Wood) were borne from the experiments that Charles and Ray Eames made with bent plywood in a spare room of their Venice Beach apartment after World War II. They had started this work during the war when they worked with the armed forces to develop a series of leg splints that could be used to more easily evacuate soldiers with injuries to their lower extremities from the battlefield (1986-99-43).
