Poster, 28th Annual National Exhibition of Advertising and Editorial Art
This is a Poster. It was designed by E. McKnight Kauffer and Edward McKnight Kauffer and made for (as the client) The Museum of Modern Art. It is dated 1949. Its medium is offset lithograph on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
By the time E. McKnight Kauffer was hired to create this poster for the 28th Annual National Exhibition of Advertising and Editorial Art in 1949, Kauffer had established a fruitful relationship with The Museum of Modern Art in New York. While he was still living in London, Kauffer had a one-man show at MoMA in 1937—the first to be held for a graphic designer. Kauffer developed a warm relationship with Alfred H. Barr, the museum’s Director, and Monroe Wheeler, the Director of Exhibitions and Publications. He was hired to design the catalogue for MoMA’s “Britain at War” exhibition in 1941. In 1949, Kauffer designed this poster for the month-long exhibition. Kauffer designed a graphic figure aiming a bow and arrow at an unseen target.
