S Chair Chair
This is a chair. It was designed by Tom Dixon. We acquired it in 2006. Its medium is recycled automobile rubber tire inner tube, steering wheel, welded steel (frame). It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
This high-backed chair by British designer Tom Dixon has multiple stretched narrow horizontal strips of recycled automobile rubber tire inner tubes over its welded steel frame on a steering wheel base. S-shaped, the chair’s seat morphs into the backrest in one continuous curve; there are no joints or pieces that need assembly. Dixon taught himself how to rework salvaged materials into functional furniture. His approach here combines recycled materials and fashions them into a sculptural product of high design.
