Poster, gee dad, modern design, huh?
This is a Poster. It was designed by Rick Valicenti. It is dated 1994 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is offset lithograph on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
In 1994 Valicenti and 3st received the commission to produce a poster showcasing the Northstar and Broughton Printing Company’s new 8-color, 26 x 40, Miller U.V. mega-press (Termin-eight-or #3). In typical fashion, Valicenti took the opportunity to simultaneously explore the quandary of commercial design in a media-saturated culture. Instead of a single poster, Valicenti produced a series of six posters titled “Gee dad, modern design, huh?” Each successive poster is crowded with ever more logos or graphic identities, some vaguely recognizable, and others so familiar that signifier and signified have merged into an indistinguishable tangle. By the end of the series, this massing of logos has fused into a single form.
