Poster, Street Scene
This is a Poster. It was designed by Philippe Apeloig and made for (as the client) Théâtre du Châtelet. It is dated 2012 and we acquired it in 2014. Its medium is screenprint on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
For many years, Philippe Apeloig has designed posters for the Théâtre Châtelet. Street Scene advertises the presentation of Kurt Weil’s 1947 opera of that title which is a tale of tenement living, loving, jealousy and death. The opera takes place in front of a tenement building which Apeloig succinctly conveys by a monumental white stoop which he mocked-up out of cardboard and photographed in the studio, similar to the process he used for his Chicago poster. In the end, he produced a stark and powerful building mass that pushes out of the dark ground and hits the viewer with great force.
