Poster, Die Linke ins Museum, Hoffnung und Widerstand [The Left in the Museum, Hope and Resistance]
This is a Poster. It is dated ca. 1998 and we acquired it in 2010. Its medium is screenprint, stencil and black spray paint on wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
This series of posters displays headshots of Che Guevara, a celebrated Marxist figure, printed in red and yellow (colors of the Soviet Communist flag) with a black stenciled overlay. Cornel Windlin uses street art techniques and highlights their placement within the highbrow setting of a museum. The immediacy associated with street art and activism calls for low-tech methods of design. This juxtaposition raises questions on the nature of Marxism within a normally bourgeois setting.
