Model 61 Chair
This is a chair. It was manufactured by Knoll International. It is dated ca. 1950 and we acquired it in 1991. Its medium is bent laminated birch, upholstery. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Named for its continuous bentwood arm and leg inspired by a grasshopper’s hind legs, this chair was the first sculptural lounge chair that Saarinen designed for Knoll. For this chair, also known as the Model 61, Saarinen employed bent laminated wood, a light but strong material often utilized for aircraft during World War II. Although the chair was not an immediate success for Knoll, it was produced from 1946 to 1965 and is back in production today.
This object was featured in our Object of the Week series in a post titled Grasshopper Chair.
