Bowl (USA)
This is a bowl. It was designed by Beatrice Wood. It is dated ca. 1981 and we acquired it in 1991. Its medium is thrown and glazed earthenware. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Wood, dubbed “the Mama of Dada,” began her career in New York among artists such as Francis Picabia, Charles Sheeler, and Man Ray, the latter with whom she co-founded the Dada magazine Blind Man. Wood did not become involved with ceramics until the 1930s, and it was not until 1948 that she turned to ceramics as a career, producing wares like this decorative bowl.
