Gustav Kahlhammer studied at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Applied Arts) from 1905–10 under Koloman Moser. His commercial graphics from this period were published in Jung Wien (Young Vienna) in 1906, The Studio in 1908, and Deustche Kunst und Dekoration (German Art and Decoration) in 1911–14. He participated in the 1908 Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Applied Arts) exhibition in London, the Vienna Kunstschau (Art Show) of 1908, winter exhibitions of the Museum für Kunst und Industrie (Museum for Art and Industry), 1910–11 and 1911–12, and the Wallpaper exhibition of 1913.
