Gustav Kahlhammer studied at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Applied Arts) from 1905–10 under Koloman Moser. His commercial graphics from this period were published in Jung Wien (Young Vienna) in 1906, The Studio in 1908, and Deustche Kunst und Dekoration (German Art and Decoration) in 1911–14. He participated in the 1908 Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Applied Arts) exhibition in London, the Vienna Kunstschau (Art Show) of 1908, winter exhibitions of the Museum für Kunst und Industrie (Museum for Art and Industry), 1910–11 and 1911–12, and the Wallpaper exhibition of 1913. He was a member of the Austrian Werkbund. Kahlhammer worked for the Wiener Werkstätte designing postcards, broadsheets, and textiles. Kahlhammer also had a successful career working for other firms, including designing textiles for the firms Backhausen and Händler. He also designed graphics for Fromme, jewelry for Dietrich, wallpaper for Thaussig, china decoration for Böck, and vignettes and decorated borders for use in commercial printing for Bauersche Giesserei.
