Cooper Hewitt says...

Palmer Luckey was born in 1992 in Long Beach, California. He was homeschooled by his mother but began taking college courses when he was in his mid-teens. As a teenager, Luckey demonstrated a serious interest in electronics and earned money repairing iPhones; he used the money to purchase virtual reality headsets, amassing a collection of more than 50. At the age of 17 in his parents’ garage, Luckey created his first prototype for what would become the Oculus Rift. Luckey launched his company, Oculus VR, in June 2012 and began fundraising for the production of the Oculus Rift with a Kickstarter campaign in August, 2012. Oculus VR’s Kickstarter campaign had an initial goal of $250,000; it raised $2,437,429. Facebook acquired Oculus VR in 2014, after which Luckey worked for Facebook until his departure from the company in 2017.
