Book Illustration, Les fleurs animées (Animated flowers), vol. 1; Belle-de-nuit

Les fleurs animées, a collection of whimsical tales of the personification of flowers, includes more than 40 caricatures of flowers metamorphosed into young women and animals. The drawings of French caracturist J. J. Grandville (pseudonym of Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard) were popularized in avant-garde periodicals such as La Silhouette, L'Artiste, La Caricature, and Le Charivari. The characters depicted in Les fleurs animées, published shortly after Grandville’s death, are both sentimental and whimsical. In Belle-de-nuit, a delicate young woman is clothed in a multi-layered flowered outfit.
