Horseman Bench, from Kassena Town series
This is a Horseman bench. It was designed by Dokter and Misses, Adriaan Hugo and Katy Taplin.
This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Southern Guild and Adriaan Hugo and Dokter and Misses and Katy Taplin as part of Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial.
Dokter and Misses reimages powerful images from African culture in their furniture pieces, which display bold lines and rich geometrical patterning. This bench, from Kassena Town series, is inspired by the intricately painted adobe homes of the Kassena people of northern Ghana and Burkina Faso. Featuring surprising openings, drawers, and secret compartments, the bench is designed in the round with no front or back sides. Hand-painted graphics meld with three-dimensional form.
It is credited Courtesy of Dokter and Misses.
