Atkinson Hyperlegible, named after the founder of the Braille Institute, is an open-source typeface family designed for enhanced readability for low vision readers. Created by Brad Scott and Elliott Scott of Applied Design Works to celebrate the Braille Institute’s 2019 centennial, Atkinson Hyperlegible is centered on letterform distinction. At its foundation, it is a grotesque sans-serif typeface to which the team incorporated character boundaries between letters, angled spurs and differentiated tails to enhance character recognition, and expanded counterspaces within letterforms for better clarity. The typeface also integrates unambiguous and distinct elements to increase recognition between, say, a B vs. 8, or a 1 vs. i vs. l vs. I—letter pairs that are similar and often disambiguated in other fonts for those with low vision.
It is credited Collected from the public domain by Cooper Hewitt in collaboration with the designer.
