Drawing, afterimage
This is a Drawing. It is dated 2012 and we acquired it in 2013. Its medium is brush and gray wash, black ink on white paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
This beautiful wash and ink drawing is a sketch for an outdoor bench that Byung-Hoon Choi made with basalt stone. The exquisitely rendered piece evokes the lyrical arc of the bench, which is seen in profile. The contrasting textures (smooth and rough) and colors (light and dark) play with the sense of balance evoked through the bench’s simple form and typify Choi’s work.
The Choi drawing proposed for acquisition would be a welcome addition to the museum’s collection of drawings by 20th- and 21st-century designers, which is an area of collection priority.
It is credited Gift of Marc Benda.
Its dimensions are
22 x 30.7 cm (8 11/16 x 12 1/16 in.)
It is signed
Signed in pen and black ink, lower right: 2012 CHOI, BYUNG HOON [monogram in black ink]
