Sidewall (France)

This is a sidewall. It was manufactured by J. Grantil Company. It is dated 1928–29 and we acquired it in 2010. Its medium is machine printed on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

The saturated purple ground adds a vibrancy to the more traditional floral pattern. The use of intense color on wallpaper increased greatly with the introduction of synthetic pigments. While first appearing on wallpaper around 1900, the variety and saturation of colors was never more apparent than those found on papers beginning in the 1920s, where less printed ornament revealed more of the boldly colored grounds.

This object was donated by Carolle Thibaut-Pomerantz. It is credited Gift of Carolle Thibaut-Pomerantz.
