Frieze (USA)
This is a Frieze. It was manufactured by M.H. Birge & Sons Co.. It is dated 1900–1910 and we acquired it in 2005. Its medium is machine-printed paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
This is a crown frieze in which the design of poppies and foliage would have continued down onto a matching sidewall paper. Crown friezes were very popular from 1905 to 1915.
Papers such as this increase the diversity of early 20th-century papers in the museum’s collection and broaden the picture of how people were designing their walls. This gift would be an asset to our collection and would benefit researchers and historic home interpretations.
