Textile, #2765 Yuragi (Fluctuation)
This is a Textile. It was manufactured by Kaneko Orimono Co., Ltd.. It is dated ca. 1997–98 and we acquired it in 2002. Its medium is warp and weft of polyester monofilament, supplementary weft of washi (japanese paper) and its technique is two intercrossed plain weave structures (double cloth) with supplementary weft patterning, shrunk. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Fluctuation is one of Akihiro Kaneko’s most distinctive textiles. Kaneko combines polyester monofilament with washi or Japanese paper to create a wonderful undulating surface design. In Fluctuation, the textile is shrunk during the finishing process and, because washi and polyester shrink at different rates, the final result is this undulating washi yarn. Fluctuation clearly demonstrates how a creative hand combined with a command of textile sciences can create a very specific effect.
Kaneko was educated at The Rhode Island School of Design. Upon graduating, he returned to his father’s textile business, Kaneko Orimono, in the important textile manufacturing city of Kiryu, Japan. There, he works on his own designs as and collaborates with various designers, including Junichi Arai and Hideko Takahashi.
