Sidewall (possibly France)

This is a sidewall. It is dated 1840–60 and we acquired it in 2000. Its medium is block printed on continuous paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

Ashlar block patterns were available with blocks printed in a variety of sizes and were frequently used in building entryways as they carried an air of strength and stability. They were also installed under the chair rail as dado papers to ground the wall. Printed to imitate marble, each of the blocks contains an acanthus medallion and outer framework that appear to be carved.

It is credited Museum purchase from Sarah Cooper-Hewitt Fund.
