Pezzato Vase
This is a vase. It was made by Venini Glassworks. It is dated 1950–51 and we acquired it in 1998. Its medium is fused colored glass squares, reheated, blown and shaped. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Pezzato glass is made by fusing together small squares of colored glass in a patchwork-like arrangement. The resulting flat sheets can then be heated and shaped into a vessel. The bright colors and casual forms of the pezzati reflected a new direction in glass design, popularized especially by Bianconi for Venini in Murano.
This object was featured in our Object of the Week series in a post titled Like a Patchwork of Light.
It is credited Museum purchase from General Acquisitions Endowment in honor of Piera Maria Watkins.
