Sidewall, Arabesque with lions

This is a sidewall. It was manufactured by Arthur & Robert. It is dated ca. 1790 and we acquired it in 1997. Its medium is block-printed on handmade paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

These exquisite panels with hand-blocked arabesque decoration printed in twenty colors are an example of Parisian papier peint. The extraordinary quality of these papers made them the dominant mode of home decoration in Europe and America during the late eighteenth century. A recent acquisition, these panels have never been seen on exhibition at Cooper-Hewitt. (Treasures from the Collection, 2003)

It is credited Museum purchase from Smithsonian Institution Collections Acquisition Program Fund.

Its dimensions are

H x W: 248 x 71.5cm (97 5/8 x 28 1/8in.)
