Drawing, Study 135 #3, Transcription of "Ave Maria," a Sacred Melody Adapted to the First Prelude of J. S. Bach by Charles Gounod
This is a Drawing. It is dated May 9, 1956 and we acquired it in 1982. Its medium is color pencil, graphite on cream wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Though not a musician, architectural sculptor John De Cesare spent his late career creating graphic representations of musical scores. In these vivid drawings, geometric forms vary in width to indicate the duration of notes, and vertical position to show pitch. He used color to clarify each line of music, alternating colors in chords to differentiate them from individual notes.
It is credited Gift of the Estate of John De Cesare.
