Vase (Italy)
This is a vase. It was made by Salviati & Company. It is dated ca. 1960 and we acquired it in 1971. Its medium is blow and cased glass. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
The island of Murano in Venice has been an important creative center for the art of glass blowing for over a thousand years. In this bud vase, Salviati & Company combined new and old techniques, including casing, in which a dense amethyst core appears to float weightlessly in bands of azure and colorless glass.
This object was featured in our Object of the Week series in a post titled Floating Colors.
It is credited Gift of Michael Lewis Balamuth.
