Textile, Jocko
This is a Textile. It was printed by Arnold Print Works, N. Adams, Mass.. It is dated 1892 and we acquired it in 1964. Its medium is cotton and its technique is printed by engraved roller on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Jocko is just one of a patented group of cloth animals first manufactured by the Arnold Print Works of North Adams, Massachusetts in 1892. With sewing instructions printed directly on the fabric, the animals were typically made from three pieces that were cut, stitched and stuffed with cotton. An optional piece of cardboard added in the bottom would make the animal stand upright. Arnold Print Works took out a full-page advertisement in the October 25, 1894 issue of The Youth’s Companion that showed Jocko along with other domestic animals like Tabby Cat, the dogs Bow-Wow, Tatters and Floss, Bunny, and Rooster.
