Textile (India)
This is a Textile. It is dated 1700–1725 and we acquired it in 1961. Its medium is cotton and its technique is mordant painted and dyed plain weave (chintz). It is a part of the Textiles department.
The pattern suggests and is undoubtedly derived from a European silk brocaded in the so-called "lace pattern" style of the early 18th century. The Indian artist copied the European model faithfully enough for us to recognize lace nets.
