Print, Zoetrope Strip, Dog Catching Ball
This is a Print. It is dated ca. 1860 and we acquired it in 1958. Its medium is lithograph on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Before cinematography, the zoetrope was a popular 19th-century amusement that created the illusion of motion. Similar to the effect of a flipbook, each of the sequenced images on this strip would appear in rapid succession, forming a scene of fluid motion when viewed through a cylindrical spinning zoetrope.
It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Mrs. E. Henry Harriman.
