Drawing, Design for a Printed Textile: Floral Border with Islands on a Lake

This is a Drawing. It was designed by Louis-Albert DuBois and manufactured by Fabrique de Fazy aux Bergues. It is dated ca. 1801 and we acquired it in 1957. Its medium is pen and black ink, brush and watercolor, graphite on blue laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

This design, attributed to the Swiss designer Louis-Albert Dubois,

shows variations in a corner design, referred to as “quarters”. The end

use would have been for a block-printed woman’s printed shawl or

neckerchief, which required different blocks for the printing of borders,

fillings and corners. Printed shawls were a less expensive alternative

to the popular woven patterns and were derived from the highly

admired imported Indian shawls.

Wall Label from exhibition, "Multiple Choice, From Sample to Product," Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, New York, NY.

Its dimensions are

33.2 x 44.8 cm (13 1/16 x 17 5/8 in.)

It is inscribed

Pen and black ink, lower left corner: D 337
