Clock Clock
This is a clock. It was made by Antoine-Andre Ravrio. It is dated 1807–10 and we acquired it in 1955. Its medium is fire-gilt bronze, blackened bronze, enameled metal (dial), blued steel (hands), glass. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
This charming clock shows a fashionable interior of the Empire period. The elegantly coiffed and draped lady seated at the keyboard has been identified in legend as Queen Hortense, who married Louis Bonaparte and whose son became Napoleon III. Another version of this clock furnished the chateau of Arenenberg, Horense's residence. Ravrio, appointed offical bronze worker to Napoleon in 1810, supplied the imperial family with the fine bronze clocks, lamps and furniture mounts at the tuileries, saint-cloud, fontainbleau and other residences. (L'Art de Vivre, 1989)
