Drawing, Cartoon for a Woven Carpet
This is a Drawing. It is dated ca. 1848 and we acquired it in 1954. Its medium is brush and gouache on heavy woven paper, lined. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Such over-scaled rococo-revival patterns, incorporating richly colored floral sprays framed by heavy foliate cartouches in bright orange-gold on a blue and green ground, were commonly used for reception-room carpets during the Second Empire in France.
