Band (Germany)
This is a Band. It is dated 1700–1750 and we acquired it in 1950. Its medium is linen and its technique is needlework on sheer plain weave foundation fabric. It is a part of the Textiles department.
In the first half of the 18th century, embroiderers in northern Europe, in competition with lace makers, produced remarkably fine linen openwork fabrics which were used in the same manner as their needle and bobbin made counterparts.
