Photograph, The Dewey Arch, Madison Square, New York
This is a Photograph. It is dated 1899 and we acquired it in 1948. Its medium is photographic print on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
The 75-foot high arch was designed by a committee of the National Sculpture Society. It was constructed of wood and plaster across Fifth Avenue at 23rd Street in New York. The colonnade stretched from 23rd to 26th streets. It honored not only Admiral George Dewey, and his leadership during the Spanish-American War, but heroes of a more remote past as well, such as John Paul Jones. A committee was formed after the celebration to perpetuate the arch as a permanent marble or granite structure dedicated to all Navy heroes, but adequate funding could not be secured.
