Sidewall, The Peacock
This is a sidewall. It is dated 1896 and we acquired it in 1938. Its medium is machine-printed paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
Design of peacocks and poppies which conjure images of formal landscaped gardens with brightly colored peacocks strutting about, showing off their plumage. The use of peacocks were popularized by Oscar Wilde and the Aesthetic Movement in the late nineteenth century. The slight bleeding of the high-speed printing works to this design’s advantage, creating a more organic feel.
