Cushion Cover (USA)

This is a Cushion cover. It was designed by William Morris and embroidered by Annie-May Hegeman and retailed by Morris & Co.. It is dated ca. 1900 and we acquired it in 1936. Its medium is mercerized cotton embroidery on cotton and its technique is embroidered on plain weave foundation. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Morris & Co.’s London store sold embroidery kits, which were a popular and inexpensive way of acquiring a Morris design while practicing the hand skills that the firm promoted. This floral pattern exhibits symmetry and a radial pattern, which were two qualities that May Morris, William Morris’s daughter and director of the embroidery workshop, recommended that a successful pattern derive from nature.

This object was donated by Annie-May Hegeman. It is credited Gift of Annie May Hegeman.
