Seafood Skewer with Dolphin and Trident Finial Skewer

This is a skewer. It is dated late 19th century and we acquired it in 1931. Its medium is silver. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Skewers, at first tools for roasting, have been used for centuries for dining, often in silver. In the late nineteenth century, they took on a more decorative role when intricately carved vegetables, fruits, and crayfish were served on skewers with ornate terminals for main-course dishes and desserts alike ("Feeding Desire: Design and the Tools of the Table, 1500 - 2005," May - August 13, 2006).

This object was donated by Mrs. Abram S. Hewitt. It is credited Gift of Mrs. Abram S. Hewitt.

Its dimensions are

L x W x D: 19.4 × 3.8 × 0.5 cm (7 5/8 × 1 1/2 × 3/16 in.)

It has the following markings

On blade: below the join a Minerva head indicating a .800 silver fineness, a standard used from 1838-1973; maker's mark of a diamond shape with a crowned "K" in the upper region, a cross in the lower region, a "J.S" through the center; a Bigorne on the opposing side.
