Plate (France)
This is a plate. It was manufactured by Aprey Pottery Factory. It is dated ca. 1770 and we acquired it in 1907. Its medium is tin-glazed earthenware, polychrome overglaze decoration. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Faience (earthenware) tablewares became increasingly popular during the eighteenth century in France among upper bourgeois families as a less expensive alternative to porcelain. The painted decoration on faience tablewares mirrored desigsn on porcelain but without gilding. (Tools for the Table, 1993).
