Fragment (Italy)
This is a Fragment. It is dated 17th century and we acquired it in 1902. Its medium is silk, metallic thread and its technique is brocaded plain weave, decorative slashing. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Predominately warp-faced plain weave (brown) patterned by a supplementary weft (flat strip of silver metallic foil wound onto white silk) which is continuous and discontinuous. A white linen shirt would have been pulled through the diagonal slits in the fabric to form puffs.
