Textile (Italy)
This is a Textile. It is dated 14th–15th century and we acquired it in 1902. Its medium is silk, metallic yarns and its technique is lampas, 4 harness broken twill plus 1/3 twill. It is a part of the Textiles department.
During the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, Italy was one of the leading producers of costly woven and embroidered silk textiles. This textile was originally intended for luxurious court costumes, although it probably was cut at a later date for use in a church vestment.
