Drawing, Door in a garden wall
This is a Drawing. It was designed by Filippo Marchionni. It is dated ca. 1754 and we acquired it in 1901. Its medium is charcoal, graphite, brush and gray watercolor on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Filippo Marchionni was the son of the architect and scholar Carlo Marchionni who is best known to us through his designs for the sacristy for St. Peter and for the Villa Albani in Rome. The Villa was built to house Cardinal Albani’s collection of antiquities. Whether or not Filippo’s arch was designed for a specific location such as the Villa Albani, it speaks of the classical revival of the 1750s of which the Cardinal was an active protagonist.
It is credited Museum purchase through gift of various donors.
Its dimensions are
19.6 x 27.2 cm (7 11/16 x 10 11/16 in.)
It has the following markings
watermark: bird above triple mount with "E" and "S" in a circle
