Necklace, The Wave, from the Curiosity Collection
This is a necklace. It was designed by Terhi Tolvanen.
This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Susan Beech as part of Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial.
Cherrywood is the dominant structural element in the organic, faceted form of this necklace by Tolvanen. Mother-of-pearl is cut into translucent pieces and layered into a large cluster on top of the cherrywood base. Thin mother-of-pearl strips wrap around the sides of the necklace to meet at the clasp. The strength of the wood plays off the delicacy of the mother-of-pearl.
It is credited Courtesy of Susan Beech and Ornamentum Gallery.
