Carpet

This is a Carpet. It was designed by Edward McKnight Kauffer.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from The Art Institute of Chicago as part of The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s.

It is dated 1929. Its medium is hemp and wool, plain weave with supplementary wrapping wefts forming cut solid pile.

The impact of the De Stijl movement can be seen in this 1929 carpet design by Edward McKnight Kauffer, who worked in collaboration with his wife, Marian Dorn Kauffer. The Kauffers, both American, met while in Paris, where they saw friend and compatriot Ruth Reeves.

It is credited Lent by The Art Institute of Chicago, Royalties from The Warner Fund, 1987.21.
