Continuum Brooch

This is a Brooch. It was designed by Katja Prins. It is dated 2007 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is silver, sealing wax. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This brooch reflects Prins’s interest in the interconnectedness of human bodies and machines. In her words, “every organic body of a living being is a kind of divine machine, or natural automaton, infinitely surpassing all artificial automatons.”

This object was donated by Susan Lewin. It is credited The Susan Grant Lewin Collection, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

Its dimensions are

H x W x D: 9 × 5.5 × 2.6 cm (3 9/16 in. × 2 3/16 in. × 1 in.)

It has the following markings

'AWIK (K reversed) '2EPB' (all in reverse) and '12' all on embossed on circumference of sealing wax medallion.
