Vessel, HY.01, from GLASS series
This is a Vessel. It was designed by Yeongkyu Yoo, cloudandco, Neri Oxman and MIT Media Lab Mediated Matter Group and made for Microsoft.
This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Neri Oxman as part of Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial.
The curving, scalloped contour of this vessel gradually smooths in this piece from Oxman’s 3D-printed GLASS series. Each piece in the series is built up from tubes of molten glass, layer by layer, yielding optically transparent structures. The tubular forms have the potential to contain and transmit media. This new technique has enormous potential for creating vessels and products as well as architectural components and building facades. The technique was unveiled by Oxman and her Mediated Matter group in September, 2015.
