Textile, from the Tell collection
This is a Textile. It was designed by Michiel Schuurman and manufactured by Vlisco. It is dated 2015 and we acquired it in 2017. Its medium is cotton and its technique is wax resist printed on plain weave.
For Vlisco’s 2015 Pop-Art themed Tell collection, graphic designer Michiele Shuurman paid homage to Roy Lichtenstein’s 1963 painting Magnifying Glass, which features the artist’s trademark raster points in two scales, in black and white. In Schuurman’s colorful version the raster points are part of a meta-pattern of dots, and magnified through trompe l’oeil glass marbles each casting a shadow in halftone raster, creating a multi-valent commentary on pattern and process.
