Cylindric Cigarette Lighter

This is a Cigarette Lighter. It was designed by Dieter Rams and manufactured by Braun AG. It is dated 1968 and we acquired it in 2015. Its medium is aluminum, molded plastic. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Innovative, simple, and pleasant to touch, this table accessory embodies some of Dieter Rams’s chief design principles. The sleek, ergonomic cylinder is both a functional refillable gas butane lighter and a “small sculptural object.” Thoughtful placement of the magnetic ignition pad deferred to the wrist movement and thumb pressure of the user.

This object was donated by George R. Kravis II. It is credited Gift of George R. Kravis II.
