Magazine Cover, Wendingen, vol. 12, no. 11/12, 1931
This is a Magazine Cover. It was designed by J. Zietsma and published by Constantinus Alting Mees. It is dated 1931. Its medium is lithograph on paper. It is a part of the Smithsonian Libraries department.
Wendingen (Dutch for Inversions/Upheaval), a large format art magazine aimed at architects and interior designers, was published in Amsterdam from 1918 to 1932. Each issue featured themes ranging from African sculpture to modern public housing in the Netherlands and chronicled contemporary art movements and design. Artists, such as the constructivist designer El Lissitzky, created the magazine’s distinctive chromolithographic covers. J. Zietsma, a Dutch architect from The Amsterdam School, designed this cover for an issue on modern church architecture. The cover consists of a series of interlocking diagonal grids superimposed over images of church windows and towers.
