This is a book illustration. It was created by Georg Friedrich Ayrer and written by Ernst Kroker and published by Dieterich. It is dated 1899. It is a part of the Smithsonian Libraries department.

A silhouette represents a person, animal, object, or scene as a solid shape of a single color with edges that conform to the outline of the subject. Silhouettes were popular in the 18th century as a less expensive alternative to painted portraiture. This work includes approximately 50 silhouettes created by German artist Georg Friedrich Ayrer. The silhouettes, owned by the Ayrer family, were compiled in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the German writer and statesman Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
