Photograph, Dressing Table
This is a Photograph. It was designed by Léon Jallot and photographed by Thérèse Bonney. It is dated 1925–35. It is a part of the Smithsonian Libraries department.
After 1925, Bonney tirelessly documented French decorative arts from exhibitions and from the manufacturers themselves. This Jallot dresser represents the work of the faction of art nouveau designers known as the constructeurs. Seeking to locate themselves in the timeline of French design, the constructeurs began with forms from the era of King Louis Philippe, which they admired for their large, curving lines and flat, modestly decorated surfaces. The constructeurs returned to this basic vocabulary of form in the face of competition from mass-produced, derivative designs, and made their name through the technical proficiency of their work and their use of solid, substantial materials.
