Textile, Portada
This is a Textile. It was designed by Larsen Design Studio and produced by Jack Lenor Larsen Incorporated. It is dated 1967 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is 40% wool, 60% linen and its technique is plain weave with deflected warp threads. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Portada is a highly textured open weave textile that would have been used primarily for drapery. Designing within the sensibility of mid-century modern architecture, nubby and highly textured natural fibers would have been the answer to softening and enhancing such an interior. As Larsen said several years ago: "We use more neutrals than anyone else because we have so many handcrafted textiles with great materials and hand-spun yarn. They don’t need much excitement. Fifty years ago, when people were collecting modern art, they didn’t want their furnishings to compete with their million-dollar paintings. Something durable and substantial but without color and pattern was what they wanted most. We were very good at that. "Texture" was the buzzword."(1)
