Collage, Candy Wear Jewelry Series
This is a Collage. It was designed by Daniel Jocz. It is dated 1999 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is photocopy and applied adhesive paper on white wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Daniel Jocz’s Candy Wear jewelry series of 1999 demonstrates a reaction to what Jocz has described as the "overtly ‘serious’ work that is being done in the US studio jewelry field today." Rather than focus on an obscure symbolic meaning behind the forms of these pieces, Jocz intends Candy Wear simply to delight both the eye and the body of the wearer. The Pop Art forms in candy colors also relate to Jocz’s conceptions of the passing pleasures of fashion trends: "Fashion to me is like candy, the kind of candy that you bought when you went to the store when you were a little kid. You buy this sweet stuff and put it in your mouth and it hits you, Kapowie! Five minutes later it’s gone." In this collage, Jocz takes a model from a fashion advertisement and adorns her with his Candy Wear X-form brooch and tiara, demonstrating the delightful contrast between the austerity of her clothing and the frivolity of his jewelry designs.
