Desert Necklace Necklace

This is a necklace. It was designed by Peter Hoogeboom. It is dated 1995 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is slip cast and glazed ceramic, silver, cork. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

In his Desert Necklace, Hoogeboom uses miniature gourd-shaped ceramic vessels to tell a story about vulnerability in an area dependent on small rations of water. In many religions, clay itself is used as part of the creation myth of the origins of mankind.

This object was donated by Susan Lewin. It is credited The Susan Grant Lewin Collection, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
